What’s your most desired travel destination?

What’s your most desired travel destination?

April 28, 2020

New Zealand has always been mine. Then Italy.  I haven’t made it to NZ yet…but I did get to Italy!

Having a partner who works in the travel Industry, you would think we could travel to a new destination every other weekend. Not quite the case however…we also have 3 children of varying ages, which makes travelling to the shop with them in tow, a super feat in itself!

2015 heralded our first ‘overseas’ holiday as a family. We flew into Rome then moved onto Tuscany where we spent 5 glorious days nestled amongst the vineyards of Chianti. What a treat! I wished we’d booked 10 nights in the quaint little farmhouse of Romitorio di Serelle.  The food, the wine, the people, the peace, the serenity, the food! My 12-year old son ate Pizza, and only Pizza the whole time we were there. Of course they also make the best pasta you will eat anywhere, simple, tasty and nutritious, no fuss required.

Our adventures through Italy also included Florence, Venice and Lake Como, all equally as stunning and as the next.  With limited time and experience, you get caught up in the whirlwind of historic landmarks. Spanish steps, St. Peter’s Basilica, The Vatican, Sistine Chapel, The Colosseum, Pantheon, Roman Forum. It’s not until you venture further out that you begin to understand and appreciate that ‘less is more’.

The pace of life is so much slower in the Italian countryside but the same could be said of any country area I guess.

My husband’s mother was born in a small village in Northern Italy called Possagno. Nestled in the countryside near Mount Grappa, it is famous as the birthplace of neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova. Visiting this small rural village was truly the highlight of our trip!  We could not speak Italian, but we didn’t need to, our language that day was food, wine and family.

Much like our city in 2020. As the pandemic forces our lives into lockdown, we once again begin to discover the simple things that bring us pleasure. Food, family time and exercise. Even the afternoon ‘siesta’ is a tempting and tantalising option for the work-at-home army.  While we wait this one out in the comfort of our own homes, we can but dream about our next overseas adventure, if we could be so lucky!

When we CAN travel again (in 2021 most likely) New Zealand is where I’m headed!

Where will you go next?  Will what we’re experiencing now change the way you travel?
